RESUMO

This study presents the rare examples of S-heteroaryl tetradentate Pt(S^C^N^O) luminescent complexes (PtSZ and PtSZtBu) containing a Pt-S bond. The presence of the Pt-S bond allows the novel Pt(S^C^N^O) complexes to exhibit temperature-dependent phosphorescent emission behavior. The PtSZtBu exhibits dual-emission phenomena and biexponential transient decay spectra above 250 K, indicating the presence of two minimal excited states in the potential energy surface (PES) of the T1 state. Through complementary experimental and computational studies, we have identified changes in orbital composition between Pt(dxy)-S(px) and Pt(dyz)-S(pz) in excited states with increasing temperature. This results in two energy minima, enabling the excited states to decay selectively and radiatively at different temperatures. Consequently, this leads to remarkable steady-state and transient emission spectra changes. Our work not only provides valuable insights for the development of novel Pt-S bond-based tetradentate Pt(II) complexes but also enhances our understanding of the distinctive properties governed by the Pt-S bond.

RESUMO

A demethylenative En-Yne radical cyclization of 1,7-enynes has been successfully developed to chemoselectively afford 3,4-dihyroquinolin-2-ones or quinolin-2-ones under the catalysis of Cu(I) photosensitizers PS3 and PS6 with different redox potentials. The preliminary mechanistic experiments revealed that the reaction underwent an unprecedented olefin-α-amino radical metathesis-type process. A reasonable mechanism was proposed to illustrate the catalyst-controlled chemoselectivity of the reaction based on preliminary mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations.

RESUMO

An enantioselective Pd-catalyzed intramolecular dearomative reductive Heck reaction of N-(o-bromoaryl) indole-3-carboxamide is developed. By employing Pd(dba)2/SPINOL-based phosphoramidite as the chiral catalyst and HCO2Na as the hydride source, a series of enantioenriched spiro indolines bearing vicinal stereocenters were afforded in moderate to good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. The reductive Heck reaction of formal tetrasubstituted alkene bearing ß-hydrogens is therefore realized by inhibiting ß-H elimination.

Background: Early ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation (VT/VF) in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has higher morbidity and mortality. This study examines gender-differentiated risk factors and underlying mechanisms for early onset VT/VF in STEMI. Methods: We analyzed data from 2,964 consecutive STEMI patients between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2021. Early VT/VF was defined as occurrence of spontaneous VT/VF of ≥30 s or requirement of immediate cardioversion/defibrillation within the first 48 h after symptoms. An ex vivo ischemic-reperfusion experiments were conducted in 8-week-old ApoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet to explore the underlying mechanisms of early VT/VF. Results: In 255 of out 2,964 STEMI patients who experienced early VT/VF, the age was younger (58.6 ± 13.8 vs. 61.0 ± 13.0 years old, P = 0.008) with a male predominance. The plasma levels of L5, the most electronegative subclass of low-density lipoprotein, was higher in early VT/VF patients compared to those without early VT/VF (n = 21, L5: 14.1 ± 22.6% vs. n = 46, L5: 4.3 ± 9.9%, P = 0.016). In the experimental setup, all male mice (n = 4) developed VT/VF post sham operation, whereas no such incidence was observed in the female mice (n = 3). Significantly, male mice exhibited considerably slower cardiac conduction velocity as compared to their female counterparts in whole heart preparations (25.01 ± 0.93 cm/s vs.42.32 ± 5.70 cm/s, P < 0.001), despite analogous action potential durations. Furthermore, isolated ventricular myocytes from male mice showed a distinctly lower sodium current density (-29.20 ± 3.04 pA/pF, n = 6) in comparison to female mice (-114.05 ± 6.41 pA/pF, n = 6, P < 0.001). This decreased sodium current density was paralleled by a reduced membrane expression of Nav1.5 protein (0.38 ± 0.06 vs. 0.89 ± 0.09 A.U., P < 0.001) and increased cytosolic Nav1.5 levels (0.59 ± 0.06 vs. 0.29 ± 0.04 A.U., P = 0.001) in male mice. Furthermore, it was observed that the overall expressions of sorting nexin 27 (SNX27) and vacuolar protein sorting 26 (VPS26) were significantly diminished in male mice as compared to female littermates (0.91 ± 0.15 vs. 1.70 ± 0.28, P = 0.02 and 0.74 ± 0.09 vs. 1.57 ± 0.13, P < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: Our findings reveal that male STEMI patients with early VT/VF are associated with elevated L5 levels. The gender-based discrepancy in early VT/VF predisposition might be due to compromised sodium channel trafficking, possibly linked with increased LDL electronegativity.

AIM: This study aimed to explore anesthesia nurses' (ANs) perceptions of roles, competencies, and attitudes towards patient safety culture, along with predictive factors for patient safety culture. INTRODUCTION: The 2021 guidelines from the International Council of Nurses aim to ensure global access to safe surgical and anesthesia care by 2030. However, in Taiwan, the roles and competencies of ANs are still evolving. Many have a limited understanding, posing potential risks to patient safety. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving ANs from five hospitals within a healthcare foundation. ANs' self-perceived roles and competencies were assessed using a structured questionnaire based on the CanMEDS framework from the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists. Additionally, data were collected using the Chinese version of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. Reporting followed the STROBE guideline. RESULTS: Among 200 ANs, a consensus emerged favored all roles and competencies, with positive attitudes toward patient safety culture. Remarkably, self-perceived competencies, working in regional hospitals, and working in medical centers significantly predicted ANs' attitude toward patient safety culture. DISCUSSION: The study results can assist ANs in gaining a deeper understanding of their roles and competencies. Considering predictive factors, strengthening ANs' competencies may contribute to enhancing patient safety culture. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Our results informed nursing leaders and policymakers in Taiwan and other countries regarding ANs' perceptions of roles and competencies. Nurse managers could consider the specific factors influencing ANs' attitudes toward patient safety culture and make great efforts to develop strategies aimed at enhancing their competencies.

RESUMO

Wolfberry, also known as goji berry or Lycium barbarum, is a highly valued fruit with significant health benefits and nutritional value. For more efficient and comprehensive usage of published L. barbarum genomic data, we established the Wolfberry database. The utility of the Wolfberry Genome Database (WGDB) is highlighted through the Genome browser, which enables the user to explore the L. barbarum genome, browse specific chromosomes, and access gene sequences. Gene annotation features provide comprehensive information about gene functions, locations, expression profiles, pathway involvement, protein domains, and regulatory transcription factors. The transcriptome feature allows the user to explore gene expression patterns using transcripts per kilobase million (TPM) and fragments per kilobase per million mapped reads (FPKM) metrics. The Metabolism pathway page provides insights into metabolic pathways and the involvement of the selected genes. In addition to the database content, we also introduce six analysis tools developed for the WGDB. These tools offer functionalities for gene function prediction, nucleotide and amino acid BLAST analysis, protein domain analysis, GO annotation, and gene expression pattern analysis. The WGDB is freely accessible at https://cosbi7.ee.ncku.edu.tw/Wolfberry/. Overall, WGDB serves as a valuable resource for researchers interested in the genomics and transcriptomics of L. barbarum. Its user-friendly web interface and comprehensive data facilitate the exploration of gene functions, regulatory mechanisms, and metabolic pathways, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of wolfberry and its potential applications in agronomy and nutrition.

Two novel six-membered perimidocarbene (PIC)-based tetradentate Pt(II) complexes were designed and successfully synthesized. Systematical experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the PIC moiety greatly affects the frontier orbitals, as well as the photophysical and excited-state properties of the Pt(II) complexes. PtYK2 has a broad emission spectrum peaking at 576 nm with a shoulder band at 620 nm, along with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) value of 100.0 nm at 77 K in 2-MeTHF; however, the emission spectrum is slightly red-shifted with a dominant peak at 610 nm and a FWHM value of 125.0 nm at room temperature in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film. Time-dependent-density functional theory and natural transition orbital analyses reveal that PtYK2 has a 3LC (3πPIC* → πPIC)-dominated character with an unexpectedly negligible contribution of 3MLCT transition (0.68%) in the T1 state, which results in a broad emission spectrum and a relatively low quantum efficiency of 7.4% in the PMMA film.

PURPOSE: Anti-gamma-aminobutyric acid B receptor (GABABR) encephalitis is an uncommon form of autoimmune encephalitis associated with a poor prognosis and a high fatality rate. We aim to find diagnostic markers for anti- GABABR encephalitis as well as the effects of immune cell infiltration on this pathology. METHODS: For quantitative proteomic analysis, isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation were used in conjunction with LC-MS/MS analysis. To conduct functional correlation analyses, differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified. Following that, we used bioinformatics analysis to screen for and determine the diagnostic signatures of anti- GABABR encephalitis. ROC curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic values. To assess the inflammatory status of anti- GABABR encephalitis, we used cell-type identification by estimating relative subsets of the RNA transcript (CIBERSORT) and explored the link between diagnostic markers and infiltrating immune cells. RESULTS: Overall, 108 robust DEPs (47 upregulated and 61 downregulated) were identified, of which 11 were immune related. The most impressively enriched pathways were complemented and coagulation cascades, actin cytoskeleton regulation, and cholesterol metabolism; GSEA revealed that the enriched pathways were considerably differentially connected to immune modulation. Eleven immune-related DEPs were chosen for further investigation. We developed a novel diagnostic model based on CSF1R and AZGP1 serum levels using ROC analysis (area under the ROC curve = 1). M1 macrophages and activated natural killer cells are likely to play a role in course of anti- GABABR encephalitis. CONCLUSION: We identified CSF1R and AZGP1 are possible anti-GABABR encephalitis diagnostic indicators, and immune cell infiltration may have a significant impact on the development and occurrence of anti- GABABR encephalitis.

Lithium ion capacitors (LICs) are a new generation of energy storage devices that combine the super energy storage capability of lithium ion batteries with the satisfactory power density of supercapacitors. The development of high-performance LICs still faces great challenges due to the unbalanced reaction kinetics at the anode and cathode. Therefore, it is an inevitable need to enhance the electron/ion transfer capability of the anode materials. In this paper, to obtain a superior-rate and high-capacity Ni3S2-based anode, highly conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets were introduced to sever as the carrier of Ni3S2 nanoparticles and simultaneously an amorphous carbon layer which coats onto the surface of Ni3S2 nanoparticles was in-situ generated by the carbonization of dopamine reactant. The as-synthesized Ni3S2/Ti3C2Tx/C composite exhibits a high specific surface area (112.6 m2/g) because of the addition of Ti3C2Tx that can reduce the aggregation of Ni3S2 nanoparticles and the in-situ generated amorphous carbon layer that can suppress the growth of Ni3S2 nanoparticles. The Ni3S2/Ti3C2Tx/C anode possesses a remarkable reversible discharge specific capacity (626.0 mAh/g under 0.2 A/g current density), which increases to 1150.8 mAh/g after 400-cycle charge/discharge measurement at the same measurement condition indicating eminent cyclability, along with superior rate capability. To construct a superior-performance LIC device, a sterculiae lychnophorae derived porous carbon (SLPC) cathode with an average discharge specific capacity of 73.4 mAh/g@0.1A/g was prepared. The Ni3S2/Ti3C2Tx/C//SLPC LIC device with optimal cathode/anode mass ratio has a satisfactory energy density ranging from 32.8 to 119.1 Wh kg-1 at the corresponding power density of 8799.4 to 157.5 W kg-1, together with a prominent capacity retention (95.5 %@1 A/g after 10,000 cycles).

Since structural analyses and toxicity assessments have not been able to keep up with the discovery of unknown per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), there is an urgent need for effective categorization and grouping of PFAS. In this study, we presented PFAS-Atlas, an artificial intelligence-based platform containing a rule-based automatic classification system and a machine learning-based grouping model. Compared with previously developed classification software, the platform's classification system follows the latest Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) definition of PFAS and reduces the number of uncategorized PFAS. In addition, the platform incorporates deep unsupervised learning models to visualize the chemical space of PFAS by clustering similar structures and linking related classes. Through real-world use cases, we demonstrate that PFAS-Atlas can rapidly screen for relationships between chemical structure and persistence, bioaccumulation, or toxicity data for PFAS. The platform can also guide the planning of the PFAS testing strategy by showing which PFAS classes urgently require further attention. Ultimately, the release of PFAS-Atlas will benefit both the PFAS research and regulation communities.

Background/purpose: Skeletal stability after orthognathic surgery is essential for positive treatment outcome. This study evaluated the stability of osteotomy segments after surgery-first bimaxillary surgery for class III asymmetry. Materials and methods: Seventy adults with class III asymmetry consecutively corrected through surgery-first Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies were investigated. Cone-beam computed tomography before treatment (T0), 1-week after surgery (T1), and after all treatment (T2, ≥1-year after surgery) was used to assess surgical movement (T0 to T1) and skeletal stability (T1 to T2) regarding the translation and rotation of the maxillary, mandibular distal, and proximal segments. Results: At T1, the maxillary segment had moved forward and upward, turned to the deviated side, and rotated downward (all P < 0.01). The distal segment of mandible had moved forward and upward and rotated upward (all P < 0.001). The deviated proximal segment had moved upward, tilted to the opposite side, and rotated upward (all P < 0.001). The opposite proximal segment had moved upward and tilted to the deviated side (both P < 0.01). At T2, significant relapse occurred in the mandible. The distal segment moved forward and upward and rotated upward (all P < 0.001). The deviated proximal segment moved upward, tilted to the opposite side, and rotated upward (all P < 0.001). The opposite proximal segment moved upward and tilted to the deviated side (both P < 0.01). Conclusion: Clinically significant relapse of class III asymmetry was discovered on the mandibular distal and opposite proximal segments.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To develop a Delirium Care Critical-Thinking Scale for nurses caring for patients in the intensive care unit and examine the scale's psychometric properties. BACKGROUND: There is a tool to evaluate nurses' critical thinking skills to determine nursing competency when delirium care is required. DESIGN: This cross-sectional, mixed-methods study. METHODS: The Delphi method was applied for collection and analysis of data during conceptualization and item generation of the tool (Phase I). Item analysis, assessment of validity and reliability of the scale (Phase II) involved 318 nurses recruited by convenience sampling from nine adult intensive care units in medicine and surgery at one medical centre. Confirmatory factor analysis assessed construct validity. Internal consistency and 2-week test-retest stability measured reliability. A Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory Scale examined concurrent validity. RESULTS: After three rounds, the Delphi method resulted in 31 scale items. Item analysis demonstrated construct reliability ranged from 9.23 to 16.18. Confirmatory factor analysis eliminated one item and extracted five factors: applying knowledge, confirming the problem and accuracy of information, reasoning logically, choosing appropriate strategies and remaining open-minded. Average variance extracted values of all factors indicated good convergent validity. Cronbach's α for internal consistency was .96 with good test-retest reliability. The correlation coefficient for concurrent validity was .301. CONCLUSION: The new Delirium Care Critical-Thinking Scale for intensive care nurses was demonstrated to be a reliable and valid tool for evaluating their ability to assess patients with delirium. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This new scale could be used to assess outcomes of education interventions and the effectiveness of nursing care quality involving patients with delirium in intensive and critical care units. REPORTING METHOD: The COSMIN checklist was used as the reporting guideline for this study. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: None.

Ultraviolet organic light-emitting diodes (UV OLEDs) have attracted increasing attention because of their promising applications in healthcare, industry, and agriculture; however, their development has been hindered by the shortage of robust UV emitters. Herein, we embedded double boron-oxygen units into nonlinear polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BO-PAHs) to regulate their molecular configurations and excited-state properties, enabling novel bent BO-biphenyl (BO-bPh) and helical BO-naphthyl (BO-Nap) emitters with hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) characteristics. They could be facilely synthesized in gram-scale amounts via a highly efficient two-step route. BO-bPh and BO-Nap showed strong UV and violet-blue photoluminescence in toluene with full width at half-maximum values of 25 and 37 nm, along with quantum efficiencies of 98 and 99%, respectively. A BO-bPh-based OLED showed high color purity UV electroluminescence peaking at 394 nm with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.166, 0.021). Moreover, the device demonstrated a record-high maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.3%, achieved by successful hot exciton utilization. This work demonstrates the promising potential of double BO-PAHs as robust emitters for future UV OLEDs.

Stains are known to be anti-inflammatory, but the mechanism remains poorly understood. Here we show that macrophages, either treated with statin in vitro or from statin-treated mice, have reduced cholesterol levels and higher expression of Jmjd3, a H3K27me3 demethylase. We provide evidence that lowering cholesterol levels in macrophages suppresses the ATP synthase in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) and changes the proton gradient in the mitochondria. This activates NFkB and Jmjd3 expression to remove the repressive marker H3K27me3. Accordingly, the epigenome is altered by the cholesterol reduction. When subsequently challenged by the inflammatory stimulus LPS (M1), both macrophages treated with statins in vitro or isolated from statin-treated mice in vivo, express lower levels pro-inflammatory cytokines than controls, while augmenting anti-inflammatory Il10 expression. On the other hand, when macrophages are alternatively activated by IL4 (M2), statins promote the expression of Arg1, Ym1, and Mrc1. The enhanced expression is correlated with the statin-induced removal of H3K27me3 from these genes prior to activation. In addition, Jmjd3 and its demethylase activity are necessary for cholesterol to modulate both M1 and M2 activation. We conclude that upregulation of Jmjd3 is a key event for the anti-inflammatory function of statins on macrophages.

Ticks are primary vectors for many tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) and pose a serious threat to veterinary and public health. Information on the presence of TBPs in Chinese Milu deer (Elaphurus davidianus) is limited. In this study, a total of 102 Chinese Milu deer blood samples were examined for Anaplasma spp., Theileria spp., Babesia spp., Rickettsia spp., and Borrelia spp., and three TBPs were identified: Anaplasma phagocytophilum (48; 47.1 %), Candidatus Anaplasma boleense (47; 46.1%), and Theileria capreoli (8; 7.8 %). Genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA confirmed their identity with corresponding TBPs. To our knowledge, this is the first report on Candidatus A. boleense and T. capreoli detection in Chinese Milu deer. A high prevalence of A. phagocytophilum with veterinary and medical significance was identified in endangered Chinese Milu deer, which could act as potential zoonotic reservoirs. The identification of the TBPs in Chinese Milu deer provides useful information for the prevention and control of tick-borne diseases.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have reported the advantages of the surgery-first approach for orthognathic correction of class III deformity, there is no report of the success of this approach for patients with cleft lip and palate. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability and outcome of bimaxillary surgery for cleft-related dentofacial deformity using a surgery-first approach. METHODS: Forty-one patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate who consecutively underwent Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies for skeletal class III deformity were included. Cone-beam computed tomographic scans before surgery, 1 week after surgery, and after orthodontic treatment were used to measure the surgical and postsurgical changes in jaw position by landmarks, and outcomes of jaw protrusion and relation, incisor angle and occlusion, and menton deviation after treatment. Self-report questionnaires regarding satisfaction with overall appearance of the face and seven facial regions were administered after treatment. RESULTS: A clinically insignificant relapse was found in the maxilla (<1 mm) and mandible (<2 mm). There was a significant improvement in the jaw protrusion and relation, incisor angle and occlusion, and menton deviation. Responses from the self-report questionnaires completed after treatment indicated that patient satisfaction was high. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate surgical-orthodontic treatment with a surgery-first approach can successfully improve cleft-related dentofacial deformity in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. RESUMO

An efficient one-pot strategy for the facile synthesis of double boron-oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (dBO-PAHs) with high regioselectivity and efficient skeletal editing is developed. The boron-oxygen-fused rings exhibit low aromaticity, endowing the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with high chemical and thermal stabilities. The incorporation of the boron-oxygen units enables the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to show single-component, low-temperature ultralong afterglow of up to 20 s. Moreover, the boron-oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can also serve as ideal n-type host materials for high-brightness and high-efficiency deep-blue OLEDs; compared to single host, devices using boron-oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-based co-hosts exhibit dramatically brightness and efficiency enhancements with significantly reduced efficiency roll-offs; device 9 demonstrates a high color-purity (Commission International de l'Eclairage CIEy = 0.104), and also achieves a record-high external quantum efficiency (28.0%) among Pt(II)-based deep-blue OLEDs with Commission International de l'Eclairage CIEy < 0.20; device 10 achieves a maximum brightnessof 27219 cd/m2 with a peak external quantum efficiency of 27.8%, which representes the record-high maximum brightness among Pt(II)-based deep-blue OLEDs. This work demonstrates the great potential of the double boron-oxygen-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as ultralong afterglow and n-type host materials in optoelectronic applications.

Two covalent organic framework (COF) films supported by a glass substrate were obtained by solvothermal reaction of an electron donor with electron acceptor 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (TF) or 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP), respectively. The TFP-BD film exhibits a nonlinear absorption coefficient of -3.01 × 105 cm GW-1. The TFP-BD film can aggregate electrons around the connected monomer through the D-A effect due to its highly polar and electronegative carbonyl oxygen atoms, thereby modulating the electronic structure of the COFs. This work provides a novel approach for the structural modulation of optical materials with strong nonlinearity.

The current study explores the potential function and the underlying mechanisms of endothelial cell-derived R-spondin 3 (RSPO3) neuroprotection against ischemia/reperfusion-induced neuronal cell injury. In both neuronal cells (Neuro-2a) and primary murine cortical neurons, pretreatment with RSPO3 ameliorated oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD)/re-oxygenation (OGD/R)-induced neuronal cell death and oxidative injury. In neurons RSPO3 activated the Akt, Erk and ß-Catenin signaling cascade, but only Erk inhibitors reversed RSPO3-induced neuroprotection against OGD/R. In mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) and neuronal cells, RSPO3-induced LGR4-Gab1-Gαi1/3 association was required for Erk activation, and either silencing or knockout of Gαi1 and Gαi3 abolished RSPO3-induced neuroprotection. In mice, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) increased RSPO3 expression and Erk activation in ischemic penumbra brain tissues. Endothelial knockdown or knockout of RSPO3 inhibited Erk activation in the ischemic penumbra brain tissues and increased MCAO-induced cerebral ischemic injury in mice. Conversely, endothelial overexpression of RSPO3 ameliorated MCAO-induced cerebral ischemic injury. We conclude that RSPO3 activates Gαi1/3-Erk signaling to protect neuronal cells from ischemia/reperfusion injury.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the three-dimensional (3D) quantitative characteristics of the surgical occlusion setup in surgery-first cleft orthognathic surgery, and to evaluate its influence on post-surgical skeletal stability. METHODS: This prospective study was comprised of 35 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate and class III deformity who consecutively underwent two-jaw surgery with surgery-first approach. Digitized dental models were analyzed to quantify the 3D characteristics of the final surgical occlusion setup. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to measure the 3D surgical skeletal movement and post-surgical skeletal stability. The correlation between skeletal stability and surgical occlusal contact or surgical skeletal movement was also evaluated. RESULTS: The surgical occlusion setup had a large incisor overjet and positive overbite, and buccal cross bite and open bite on second molars. Occlusal contact on three segments was present in 51.4% of the patients, and the average number for tooth contact was 4.3 teeth. No correlation was found between maxillary or mandibular stability and surgical occlusal contact. However, a significant correlation was found between maxillary and mandibular stability and the surgical skeletal movement. CONCLUSIONS: The surgical occlusion for correction of cleft-associated class III deformity using the surgery-first approach was characterized with large overjet and positive overbite, and posterior cross bite and open bite. On average, there was occlusal contact on four to five teeth; half of surgical occlusion setups had contact on three segments. The post-surgical skeletal stability was not related to the surgical occlusal contact but to the surgical skeletal movement.
